In today’s world, dealing with players is a different game than it used to be. There’s a lot more to that handling the different personalities. So much of it is the relationships that go on in that locker room, the relationship they have with the head coach and the effort that’s put out there Obviously you want a guy that can manage people and understands what he wants to do on the offensive side and defensive sides, but also can manage coaches and manage players, which I think is the biggest part of that job.” Elway said improving the offense will be the top priority during the off-season, but he doesn’t want the team to take a step back defensively. Elway said he expects Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch to compete for the quarterback job, but he would not rule out looking elsewhere in order to improve. “We draft players, we sign players, but we have to make them better when they get here,” Elway said. “That’s why the coaching staff is so important. And that’s why this search is going to be so important. We’re fortunate that we have a lot of good coaches already here, which is going to help the new coach get off to a good start.” Broncos players expressed hope that the new coach would have characteristics similar to Kubiak’s strong leadership and a history of looking out for players. “He has to have great morals. I want him to respect us as players. I want him to get after us and let us know he’s not playing any games,” Broncos linebacker Corey Nelson said.
